WHAT IF…?
Using the Tools of Creativity-Innovation to Find Your Voice as a Painter
What if you have everything you need right now to create a life enhanced by making meaningful art? As a major tool for artists and innovators, “What if” questions spark new possibilities and new combinations of existing ideas. Want focus and authenticity? The key is starting small and working fast, perhaps not making masterpieces (at first!), but generating a platform for original work. In this workshop we will make numerous small paintings and several larger works that can become the basis for a uniform body of work. Starting with an initial idea personally meaningful to you and improvising from there, we will create multiple variations combining principles of design with intuition and experimentation. Any visual medium is acceptable; instructor will demo in oils, but technique is not this workshop’s primary focus. This is primarily about finding yourself as a creative individual and channeling that energy into compelling art that truly feels like yours.

Art is just an attempt to create meaning, both in your own individual life and in the lives of the people you connect with. That’s something I’ve been trying to do as long as I can remember. What keeps me coming back to the easel is a
perpetual unrest and an urge to be part of collective search for meaning and satisfaction. It’s the same impulse I had as a teacher of literature – an attempt to make some sense of what’s going on and figure out what’s important before we die.
The paintings I love and aspire to create turn the pain and confusion of being human into a kind of beauty that doesn’t deny the darkness or sugarcoat reality yet insists on a lyrical engagement, not just with the world around us, but with the deeper mysteries of the human heart.
