SKETCH CLUB
Thursdays (9-12) Jun - Oct (six week sessions) ($180)
All mediums welcome. Ogunquit, ME. (limit 10)
Session #1: Jun 15 - July 20
Session #2: July 27 - August 31
Session #3 Sep 07 - Oct 19
Sketch Club's motto is, "Keep it simple"...Bring a pencil, sketchbook and draw. It's been said that the three most important elements that determine the success or failure of a work of art are, Design, Drawing and Values. With a focus on the basic principles of picture making, Sketch Club's mission is to practice using the tools of the artist while observing nature with the simple objective of learning to see the world through the eyes of an artist. We take a "Right-Brain" approach to understanding visual information and attempt to rewire your brain to think and see like an artist. Instead of seeing a sky, land mass, trees or water, we ask you to squint and see abstract puzzle shapes that have value and color. Through discussion, hand outs, demonstration, critique, practice and side-by-side assistance in the field, students will develop and grow their understanding of the visual language. All mediums are welcome. This class meets every Thursday morning in various outdoor locations in Ogunquit and York county, Maine. Locations and particulars provided upon registration.

"Simple!...Pencil, Sketchbook".
It has been said that Rembrandt could make a work of art using only a rag and shoe polish...any tool in the right hands can make art...it is the orchestrated and rythmic balance of the eye, brain, hand and heart that makes the art. The sketch club motto is, "Keep it simple", all you really need is a pencil and a sketchbook but please feel free to bring any medium you are comfortable with. The focus of the class is on learning to see like an artist, the principles discussed are applicable to any medium. The instructors are versed in a variety of mediums and tools and are capable of assisting in their technical applications. This is an outdoor sketch class so think portable and light weight regardless of your medium choice. If your medium choice includes colors, make sure you are able to make a complete color wheel. That is, a minimum of the three primaries (Red, yellow and blue...plus white.
All tools welcome..your choice:
* Drawing tools: Pen & ink, Pencil, Charcoal, eraser and sketchbook

From the studio of Beaman Cole: "For working artists, sketching is very much a part of the creative process. It can incorporate fact taking, picture design or color notes. Artists’ often sketch with drawing and painting media. In this class you will be able to hone your sketching skills in any media with the help and encouragement of an avid sketching professional. Bring your supplies, learn and have fun".
BEAMAN COLE SKETCHBOOKS
Beaman Cole studio notes: For the sketch club we will be learning about and practicing outdoor sketching with any medium you wish. Classes will start with a quick lecture and demo covering important aspects of sketching such as perspective, values, planning, borders and control. If you are new to sketching outdoors or just want to be easy, I’d recommend just grabbing several regular #2 pencils, a sharpener or knife, a sketchbook, a kneaded eraser and a pencil box. If you have a sketching pencil set, use those. If you are interested in color, you will need to work in paints, inks, pastels, markers or colored pencils.
While not essential, I like having a very compact and light weight chair. I often sit on a rock, a bench or such but enjoy my chair and the comfort it brings. I recommend a nice light one you don’t mind carrying. I have a GCI Xpress Lounger chair that I like although it’s not as light as some. You can find such on Amazon and Kittery Trading had them in the past. Of course there are many other great chairs. If you can, test them out. Kittery TP has a selection in the hunting area as well as the camping area. I know Kittery has a very comfortable 3 legged chair in the hunting area. I’ve found good ones at Bass Pro Shop and other Hunting Shops. My chair has a cup holder I use when doing water colors and that’s handy. Some chairs have little arm tables that might be helpful.
Another nonessential that I sometimes use is a fanny pack. I use this to carry my pencils, watercolors, water and brushes plus a small pad. If you become a serious sketcher you may want one.
As for materials, below are some other media possibilities

If you are unfamiliar with some of these options but want to try them, I recommend you come to the first class with a paper and pencils and I’ll explain to you what is necessary for other options.
In all cases I tend to sketch on 9x12 paper or smaller. Small sizes fit nicely on the lap. A small easel can be used if you wish. I prefer my lap.
