Join Nationally recognized artist, Hillary Scott and Todd Bonita for a team-taught, 4 day intensive, Plein air to studio painting workshop. In this unique offering, we will begin by spending two days outdoors: Photographing, sketching and creating Plein air studies of the landscape in preparation for an indoor studio painting. This will follow with two studio sessions designed to transform our reference material into a well thought out, finely crafted and poetic painting.
Day one (Todd Bonita) We will meet on site at a spectacular Seacoast location with our cameras and sketch pads for a walking design tour in search of subject matter for our painting. Todd’s lecture on the art of "How to choose a motif" is packed with information, topics include:
* Tha Art of scene selection and what to look for
* Design principles and how to infuse design into your composition
* The four formats and design tensions
* Five visual cues that enhance the illusion of three dimensions
* Four biggest design mistakes
* Seven elements of picture making
* Painting startegy for full and half light days
* Tips on using the photo editing software on your Iphone or Ipad to enhance your compositions.
Day two (Todd Bonita) We will meet on site again and execute color studies and plein air paintings as final prep for the indoor studio sessions.
Day three (Hillary Scott) will lead a brief discussion on studio process followed by a grisaille demonstration. Students will then create an underpainting utilizing your photos, sketches, color studies and plein air painting.
Day four (Hillary Scott) will discuss and demonstrate how I add thin layers of color to the underpainting. I will briefly discuss materials, ie mediums, my color palette, brushes, etc. At the end of the day students will start adding color to their underpainting with individual assistance. At the end of the day we will look at the works in progress as a group and I will answer any questions

I was classically trained in drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Boston (1996) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After more than a decade as a professional Illustrator, I started painting full time as an oil painter in 2006. I love painting coastal New England imagery outdoors in plein air equally as much as crafting more involved compositions in my studio. Above all, I love the process and simple joy of being with my tools and painting.
