Join us for 5 days of outdoor painting, eating, drinking and living in the ancient Tuscan village of Spannocchia. We will gather with our paint boxes on the rolling hillsides of an 1,100 acre sustainable farm and cooking school with an historic 13th century castle, Villa and rustic farmhouses. We will enjoy traditional Italian cooking prepared from the working gardens. Paint in the shadows of some of the most celebrated artists, capturing the color and spirit of this romantically alluring location.
There will be a daily demonstration and discussions on composition, design, value and capturing light and atmosphere in your paintings. Beginners to experienced artist are welcome to join this supportive and spirited group.
Learn invaluable tools in order to tackle Alla Prima painting with confidence. The term Alla Prima means 'At One Go'. In his remarkable treatise 'In Praise of Painterly Painters', the late artist, author and teacher, Charles Movalli wrote; painterly painters are surrounded by seeming contradictions. They finish by not finishing, include by leaving out, paint more by painting less. Their means are easy to see, the results, immediately felt. But how such seemingly insufficient means lead to these results is a mystery.
In this five day plein air workshop, we will explore this method of Alla Prima painting. Economy of stroke is within every painters grasp if they are willing to approach the painting process with a 'Less Is More' mind set. Our goal with each painting will be to see our subject as shapes of color and value and not as individual objects. When viewed in this way, we can look at our subject with a painters eye, react quickly and make confident marks on the canvas that are uniquely an expression of our individual selves. There will be a daily demonstration and discussions on composition, design, value and capturing light and atmosphere in your paintings. ABOUT DAVID LUSSIER

DAVID LUSSIER.
David Lussier is an award winning contemporary impressionist and nationally recognized plein air painter and workshop instructor. He is a painter in the purist sense of the word. In his poetic and intimate oil landscapes he strives to capture the essence and sense of place of his subject matter. His use of bold broad brushwork brings the surfaces to life and begs the viewer to return for a second look. David started his career as a commercially trained illustrator, but he quickly realized that his passion was in the fine arts. He has been painting professionally for more than twenty five years, has garnered more than 75 prizes for his work and is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States. His work has been featured in many art journals and he is a professional member of some of the finest art associations and groups in the country. David is also an official U.S. Open artist for the United States Golf Association. Four of his paintings hang in the permanent collection of the USGA Museum in Far Hills New Jersey.

3) What will we do if it rains?
We have rented a building on the property that they call the museum. It houses a collection of Tuscan artifacts, tools, pottery, household items that were found on the property dating back 1000 years. The museum will serve as our school house for lecture, Independent study, painting in inclement weather, wet painting and supply storage and relaxing for an occasional wine critique.
4) Can I ship my art supplies to Spannocchia before so I can travel lightly?
Yes. Please be sure to ship it so it arrives a week before your workshop to insure it is there when you arrive and no sooner please, as we do not want to burden them with storage for longer than they need to. Please let me know you will be shipping and when so that I can let them know they are expecting a package. Please ship to:
